A non-parametric indicator Kriging method for generating coastal sediment type map. OceanDocs
Liu, Fucheng; Peng, Jun; Zhang, Cunyong.
Coastal sediment type map has been widely used in marine economic and engineering activities, but the traditional mapping methods had some limitations due to their intrinsic assumption or subjectivity. In this paper, a non-parametric indicator Kriging method has been proposed for generating coastal sediment map. The method can effectively avoid mapping subjectivity, has no special requirements for the sample data to meet second-order stationary or normal distribution, and can also provide useful information on the quantitative evaluation of mapping uncertainty. The application of the method in the southern sea area of Lianyungang showed that much more convincing mapping results could be obtained compared with the traditional methods such as IDW, Kriging...

A null model for explain crustacean zooplankton species associations in central and southern patagonian in land waters OceanDocs

A Numerical Study on the Effects of Orography During the Landfall Process of Typhoon Haitang. OceanDocs
Zhang,Jianhai; Chen, Hongmei; Zhu, Xiaoming.
The landfall process of typhoon Haitang which affected East China seriously was simulated by using the MM5 model and the track, intensity, precipitation and structure of typhoon were successfully reproduced. Then through the sensitive test, the effects of terrain were analyzed. Results show that the irregular track during the period of typhoon passing through Taiwan and later landfalling at Fujian was in relation to the occurring and developing of orthographic impressed depression. The amount of rainfall was enhanced more than one time and the strength of typhoon was weakened 4 to 5 hPa. It is found that the effect of terrain on the structure of typhoon is limited at low level and is backward in space compared with the one at high level. In addition, the...

A preliminary investigation of age and growth of Otolithes ruber from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa OceanDocs
Fennessy, S.T.; Brash, J.M..
This study investigated age and growth of Otolithes ruber, found in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The specimens were collected from prawn trawlers that operate off the shallow water Tugela Bank and from a recreational boat fishery in Durban. Estimates of age and growth parameters were based on the examination of sectioned sagittal otoliths. There was difficulty in estimating growth parameters for separate sexes because the small fish were not sexed and the numbers of males was low. Periodicity of growth zone formation was assumed to be annual although periodicity of growth zone deposition could not be established by marginal zone analysis. The von Bertalanffy growth curve was used to describe the combined male and female growth of O. ruber: Lt = 419mm TL...

A Shallow-CISK-Deep-Equilibrium Mechanism for The Interaction Between Large-Scale Convection and Large-Scale Circulations In The Tropics OceanDocs
Wu, Z..
In this paper, the circulations driven by deep heating and shallow heating are investigated through analytically solving a set of linear equations and examining circulations simulated by a dry primitive equation model. Special emphasis is placed on the low-level mass (moisture) convergence associated with the forced circulation and the maintenance of the shallow and deep heat sources. It is found that the forced circulation driven by shallow heating is more likely to be trapped horizontally near the heating area but relatively extended in the vertical. As a consequence, diabatic heating can not balance adiabatic cooling due to upward motion. At the levels slightly above the top of the heating, a negative vertical gradient of temperature perturbation...

A Simple Non-Parametric Gis Model For Predicting Species Distribution: Endemic Birds In Bioko Island OceanDocs
Fa, J.E.; Lenton, S.M.; Del Val, J.P..
Species mapping is a useful conservation tool for predicting patterns of biological diversity, or identifying geographical areas of conservation significance. Mapping can also improve our understanding of the appropriateness of habitat areas for individual species. We developed a new model, PREDICT, for mapping habitat suitability of plant and animal species from incomplete field survey data. PREDICT is a statistical program written for use within a GIS (geographic information system). It produces images and statistics that assess the potential of unstudied areas for wildlife for which presence/absence data and basic habitat information are available. Suitability for a target species is determined within surveyed and non-surveyed squares by a form of...

Abondonce relative et estimation de la biomasse des petits pelagiques des eaux tunisiennes OceanDocs
Hattour, A.; Ben Abdallah, L.; Guennegan, Y..
Within the frame of the National Program (PNM), 'Assessment of Marine Tunisian Resources' (1996-1999), two prospecting surveys on small pelagic fishes, have been led in narrow collaboration with French Institute IFREMER. Their objectives were to specify the relative fishes abundance, their spatial-temporal variability but also to quantify the maximum sustainable yield (MSY) of this resource. A third important goal was to familiarize a Tunisian scientist team, with numerical methods and data processing used during the cruises (reading of echograms, treatments of data, etc.) in stocks assessment. It is known that the indirect stocks assessment methods of small pelagic species is not reliable, reason for which we opted to apply echo - integration techniques....

Absolute migration and the evolution of the Rodriguez Triple Junction since 75 Ma OceanDocs
Masalu, D.C.P..
The Rodriguez Triple Junction (RTJ) is a junction connecting three mid-ocean ridges in the Indian Ocean: the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR), the Central Indian Ridge (CIR) and the Southeast Indian Ridge (SEIR). The evolution of the RTJ has been studied extensively for the past 10 Ma and the triple junction is believed to be largely a ridge-ridge-ridge (RRR) triple junction. However, due to the scarcity of data its configuration prior to that period is poorly understood. The migration of the RTJ in the hotspot reference frame, for the past 75 million years has been mapped, by reconstructing its traces on the three plates (African, Antarctic and Indian) to their former positions. The results show that the RTJ has migrated northeasterly at velocities varying...

Abundance and Population Structure of the Blacklip Pearl Oyster, Pinctada margaritifera l. 1758 (Bivalvia: Pteriidae), in Coastal Kenya OceanDocs
Kimani, E.N.; Mavuti, K.M..
Pearl oysters are an important marine resource within the Indo-Pacific oceans. They are widely cultured for the production of black pearls, their flesh is eaten, and their shell, known as mother-of-pearl (MOP) is used in the ornament and button industry. The blacklip pearl oyster, Pinctada argaritifera L., has been harvested from East Africa for MOP for decades. A survey within nearshore habitats in Kenya showed that Pinctada margaritifera is widely distributed in shallow lagoons, bays and channels. Other oyster species found during the survey were the wing oyster, Pteria penguin, occurring in deep channels in Shimoni and Mombasa, and Pt. chinensis, within lagoons and channels in Malindi, Mombasa and Shimoni. Pinctada margaritifera was most abundant in...

Abundance and Reproductive Biology of the Penaeid Prawns of Bagamoyo Coastal Waters, Tanzania OceanDocs
Mgaya, Y.D.; Teikwa, E.D..
The coastal waters of Bagamoyo in Tanzania constitute an important penaeid prawn trawling ground. Despite the high economic value attached to this resource, the biological information necessary for its sustainable exploitation is scanty and fragmented. The present study was therefore designed to investigate the species composition, population abundance and reproduction of the penaeid prawns in Bagamoyo coastal and nearshore waters. Samples were obtained monthly for a period of one year from inshore waters adjacent to the Ruvu Estuary while additional samples were bought at the beach from artisanal fishermen. In the laboratory, samples were identified to the species level. Four penaeid species, Fenneropenaeus indicus (formerly known as Penaeus indicus...

Abundance of the excavating sponge Cliona delitrix in relation to sewage discharge at San Andrés Island, SW Caribbean, Colombia OceanDocs
Chaves-Fonnegra, A.; Zea, S.; Gómez, M.L..
It is known that the encrusting and excavating Caribbean sponge Cliona delitrix may increase its abundance near sources of sewage. To ascertain whether its current conspicuousness in leeward reefs of San Andrés Island (SW Caribbean, Colombia) is related to organic pollution from local raw sewage discharges, quantitative data on density and cover of this sponge and other benthic components was obtained from belt and line transects at seven stations along the shallow (5-10 m deep) terrace. Coral mucus was sampled to quantify Escherichia coli bacteria, as an approximate indicator of sewage plume influence on benthic biota. A negative multiplicative regression between amount of E. coli in coral mucus and distance from the main raw sewage outlet demonstrated...
